A C Section massage is a session working with any issues that a mother may be left with post having her baby.
Scars of all kinds tend to have ‘adhesions’ or scar tissue around the scar and can travel up and down the body. I often use the analogy of pegging a line on a top where the scar would be and trying to move the arms and see how your mobility is restricted. I have a post on instagram to show this. View it here.
What does the session involve?
Firstly, I think it’s important to say that this treatment is NOT painful. I have so many mums coming in worried that it’s going to hurt and it really won’t. It’s a very gentle treatment, and the most you may feel is some mild ‘pulling’ but no discomfort. If I’m asked to stop I always move on and come back to the area if needed.
Each Mum presents slightly differently with different issues so this session really is a personal one to you. As with all my sessions I will listen to what’s bothering you and how you are feeling. I may assess you through movement but the biggest way to check is literally by using my hands to feel the area and feel what’s going on.
I could be working with the scar, the surrounding area of the tummy, ribs, hips, pubic bone and hip flexors but I will very much cater the session to your needs.
When is the best time to have a treatment?
Your scar needs to be clean, dry and healed to be able to treat it. This can be anything from approximately 6-12 weeks but can be longer. It really depends on things like:
- How well you heal in general
- How much rest you have had to be able to heal well
- Whether your scar became infected or not
- If this isn’t your first section you may have previous scar tissue that may make your healing time a little longer
- Any other health or ongoing issues you may have
There really is no rush to have a treatment unless you are in discomfort. I can treat old scars as well as new ones, so please don’t feel it’s something you have to rush to do. Wait till you can have some time for yourself and allow someone to look after your little one for you. The first session is 90 minutes and all of that time is needed. You are welcome to bring a little one in with you but you really need to be able to relax whilst having the treatment done.
I haven’t touched my scar yet can I still come?
More often than not, scars hold on to emotions. Even if your section was a planned one some women are surprised at how it can spark some emotions when it’s touched.
I totally understand that some Mums don’t want to look at or touch their scar. I always suggest you start small and that could be by just placing your hand on your scar, over clothes initially. Feel the warmth from your hand and feel the pressure. Build this up over time if necessary to placing your hand on your scar itself. Again build this up with time if needed and then use a clean muslin, cotton wool pad or clean soft make up brush to gently waft over the whole area.
You can then move on from this to using a cotton bud around and on the scar itself. All the time we are trying to desensitise the scar and allow it to become used to some touch.
Having said all of this, I am more than happy to be the first person to touch your scar if it is difficult for you. I will start slowly and gently and work with you at your pace.
This really is not a session to fear at all. the feedback and reviews of the session I get are amazing. Just this week a client wrote:
“I wanted to thank you so much for yesterday. I can’t tell you how different I feel, I feel like I can move freely and when I was getting dressed this morning I looked in the mirror and felt like I recognised my body for the first time since I had my baby. I know that sounds weird but I don’t know another way to describe it and I’m wearing something today that I wouldn’t have felt comfortable in yesterday”
